If you've noticed condensation on your windows, you're not alone. This is a common issue in many homes, especially in colder climates like Toronto and the GTA. While sweaty windows can be unsightly, they can also lead to more serious problems. But why does this happen, and how can it be prevented?

Why Do Windows Sweat?

In the winter, the temperature outside drops, and the air becomes drier. As the temperature falls, relative humidity decreases. For example, at 0°C, relative humidity (RH) is 40%, and at -25°C, it drops to 20%. Meanwhile, inside our homes, we keep things warm, usually around 20°C, with an ideal RH of 35-40%.

When warm, moist air from the inside meets the cold window glass, condensation occurs. This happens because the window glass reaches the "dew point," the temperature at which moist air turns into water. Since windows are often the coldest part of your home, this is where condensation tends to form, leading to sweating.

How to Reduce Window Sweating

To reduce condensation and sweating on your windows, try these simple steps:

  1. Turn down your humidifier (often connected to your furnace).
  2. Open windows to allow fresh, dry air to circulate and replace the moist indoor air.
  3. Open your blinds at night to allow the register air to warm the window area as temperatures drop.
  4. Run your furnace fan to keep the air circulating.
  5. Run the fan during and after a shower to eliminate excess moisture in the air.
  6. Use the kitchen fan during and after cooking to clear out steam.
  7. Avoid drying clothes indoors as this adds moisture to the air.
  8. Be mindful of plants indoors, as they can add moisture.
  9. Monitor what adds moisture to your home and control it accordingly.
  10. Upgrade to Triple Pane Energy Star High Efficiency rated windows to reduce condensation and sweating.

Why Should You Be Concerned About Sweaty Windows?

Condensation on your windows might seem like a minor issue, but over time, it can lead to serious problems:

  1. Water on window glass should be wiped dry to avoid issues.
  2. Water that settles on the window sill can lead to paint flaking and wood rot.
  3. Moisture on window frames can encourage mold growth, which can negatively affect your health.
  4. Mold formation can reduce the overall air quality in your home.

Thinking About Replacing Your Windows?

If you're considering replacing your windows and want to avoid future condensation problems, pay attention to the window ratings. Lower U-values and higher ER (Energy Rating) values can help reduce the amount of condensation. But proper installation is just as important. At Encore Home Improvements, we have over 30 years of experience in window installation in Toronto and the GTA. Our experts can help you choose high-performance windows that are perfect for your home and ensure they're installed properly to prevent moisture problems.
